How to Grow Baby Green Romaine Lettuce

Babies need calcium for strong bones and teeth, Vitamin C to boost the immune system, and other nutrients that help them grow. And one of the best sources of these vital ingredients is baby green romaine lettuce.

It's easy to grow - just follow these directions:

- Plant seeds about ½ inch deep in soil with good drainage. You can use a soilless mix or regular potting soil mixed with compost or manure if you want things to go more quickly. Plan on planting two seeds per pot because not all of them will germinate. - Keep the soil moist but not wet by watering every day or every other day unless it rains heavily outside for several days in a row (then skip watering). It should take about two weeks for your seedlings to emerge. - Once they are about four inches high, thin them out so that there is only one plant in each pot by pulling out the extra seedlings. - Transplant your baby green romaine lettuce plants into larger pots or boxes when you are sure they have three leaves and the roots are showing through the soil. You want to make sure they are well-established before transplanting outside or inside.

During the growing process, keep an eye on your lettuce for signs of pests like aphids, slugs, and snails. Aphids are tiny green insects that come in clusters while slugs and snails are brownish-gray slimy critters that leave silvery streaks in their wake.

Though baby green romaine lettuce is tasty on its own, you can add other veggies to your salad mixes to give it different flavors and nutrients. Try adding cucumbers, tomatoes, or bell peppers. You can also make a nice dressing with vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, and salt and pepper - and enjoy your healthy, homemade salad.
